Beenie Man smash hit single ‘Who Am I’ made it on Billboard Magazine’s “98 Best Songs Of 1998” list.

Credited with the infamous ‘Oh nah nah’ the King of Dancehall’s ‘Who Am I’ single is described by Billboard as one of dancehall’s few pop culture masterpieces.

The track was released by Beenie Man in 1998. It is the second track on his album ‘Many Moods of Moses’ album.

The song is based on the ‘Playground Riddim’ produced by Jeremy Harding, then DJ NuMark. According to Harding, “Beenie Man had heard the riddim ‘Playground’ on several occasions and loved it. He had even written a tune already when he arrived at the studio to voice without any prior notice. I heard a knocking one morning…and couldn’t believe when I saw Beenie Man sitting outside complaining about how long they had been banging down the door. I turned on the equipment, and he went straight into the booth to record a perfect version of “Who Am I” in what seemed like one take.”

‘Who Am I’ became such a staple that Beenie Man had to transform the track in the year 2000 with ‘Girls Dem Sugar’ a collaboration featuring pop singer Mya, the publication reports.

According to Billboard Charts History, ‘Who Am I’ peaked at Number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1998.

Billboard’s “98 Best Songs Of 1998” list celebrates the classics that best defined 1998, and the ones that have stuck with us in the decades since, with 1998 recognised as the year a brave new pop world was recognised in music. Songs were counted as eligible if they were released as singles in 98, or if they debuted on the Billboard charts in 98.
