Nicki Cannon’s Jamaican dancehall drama film “King of the Dancehall” will soon be available on YouTube Red.
YouTube Red is a paid membership, available in certain countries, that gives users an amplified video and music experience across YouTube. Members are charged $10 USD monthly and can watch YouTube ad-free, exclusive content, save videos offline, and play videos in the background.
“Music and dance are universal themes, and I’m excited to partner with YouTube to bring a story about the world’s sexiest dance tradition to its massive audience,” Cannon said Monday in a statement. “This film invites viewers into a vibrant yet little-known world outside of the Caribbean — the Jamaican dancehall. We assembled an amazing cast, mixed documentary footage from real-life dancehall scenes, and collaborated with music legends to bring King of the Dancehall to life.”

Susanne Daniels, global head of original content at YouTube also confirmed the partnership noting that dance content performs well on their platform. “We are excited to be in business with a multi-talented creative force like Nick Cannon,” said Daniels. “Whether he’s acting, producing or hosting, he has an undeniable ability to make a connection with the audience and keep them captivated. We know our audience, especially the millions of music and dance fans, will be excited to see him back in a lead role. This drama has all the right elements to be incredibly popular on YouTube.”
“King of the Dancehall” made it’s premiere last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, the movie is about, Tarzan (Nick Cannon) who hatches a ganja-based scheme to cover the costs of medical care for his sick mother (Whoopi Goldberg), he has to decamp from his native New York to Kingston, Jamaica. Once on the Caribbean island, he solicits the help of his fast-talking cousin (Busta Rhymes) and makes quick headway in the world of weed. But there’s another, much tougher scene that he’s not prepared for: the dancehall.
Lost amidst the bouncing bodies and grinding hips, Tarzan needs the help of Maya (Jamaican make-up artist Kimberly Patterson) to learn the right moves. But when another woman makes her move, Tarzan is faced with the romantic decision of his life, and a choice between two very different lifestyles.
The movie is narrated by the ‘King Of Dancehall’ Beenie Man, he also delivers the official sound track for the movie.
