United States Olympic gold medal winning swimmer, Ryan Lochte, has been charged for falsifying a police report, and has been summoned to Brazil according to TMZ reports.

The disgraced American swimmer made headlines after falsifying reports that he and three other team-mates had been robbed at gunpoint at a gas station in Rio, by men claiming to be police. The accusations however proved to be untrue after video evidence was released.

According to TMZ the swimmer has now been formally charged in relation to the incident, and has been summoned to Brazil for a hearing. However, the charges laid against him are not extraditable, so he cannot be forced to go back.

If convicted of the crime Lochte could face up to 6 months in jail, but it is likely that his lawyers will seek to strike a deal similar to fellow swimmer Jimmy Fiegen, and make a donation to a local charity.
