Vybz Kartel will not be a part of a initiative allowing several prison inmates to perform during Jamaica’s 55 celebrations.

Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Senator Pearnel Charles Jr, says incarcerated Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel will not be among inmates chosen to display their talents during Jamaica’s 55 celebrations.

According to the Senator, the initiative is part of a serious rehabilitation program, which aims to help inmates express their various talents in art and music, and should not be used as a publicity stunt.

It remains unclear how exactly inmates are actually chosen for the program, but the Minister did reveal that the inmates with special talents usually make themselves known within the prison system.

Several experts have since voiced their opinions saying that if the entertainer meets the necessary criteria and does not pose a security risk then he should be allowed to perform within the program.

Vybz Kartel is currently serving a life sentence for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. His appeal hearing is scheduled for February 2018.
