Popular media personality ZJ Sparks was not a massive fan of the Gully vs Gaza era of Dancehall.

The female radio disc jock recently sat down for an interview with The Fix where she revealed that she was never a huge fan of that era in Dancehall music as it overshadowed a lot of other great artistes.

According to Sparks, it was an exciting period for fans, as they got to see two of their favorite entertainers cement their places in Dancehall history, but it also took the attention away from a lot of great music by other artistes at the time.

“Yuh know that is a period I actually did not like as a DJ… I didn’t like it, uhmm… It was good for uhmm Gully and Gaza, because it cemented them in Dancehall history, and it ensured that each member of their group would get work, but you had some good music that was coming out locally at that time, and when yuh go parties or when yuh on the radio nobody nuh waa hear that,” said the disc jock.

She claims the fiery rivalry was so dominant that fans would pay little to no attention to other acts saying “People would tolerate hearing some music, then..alright just get to the Kartel and Mavado nuh.”

The seasoned media personality did, however, reveal that she is happy where the genre is now in terms of balance, saying there is much more variety with different sounds emerging. She made reference to acts such as Jada Kingdom, Baker Steez, and others with their unique sounds.

The Gully vs Gaza feud was regarded as one of the most iconic rivalries in Dancehall history, reaching a near cult-like status among younger fans, which forced the Jamaican Government to intervene following several outbreaks of violence within schools and communities.
