Chet Hanks

Tom Hanks’ rapper son, Chet needs to be made an honorary Jamaican!

Chet Hanks made a big impression with Caribbean viewers at the Golden Globes last Sunday night.

Hanks, who goes by the rap moniker Chet Haze, was one of the surprises of the night as he gave a hilarious presentation in Jamaican patois during an interview.

Hanks, had many viewers bemused on the red carpet as he inexplicably switched to an offbeat version of Jamaican patois.

The young musician gave the comedic shoutout shortly before his father was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2020 Golden Globes.

Chet’s hilarious attempt has since sparked mixed reactions on social media with many split on the topic.

While some found the outburst as offensive, calling it cultural appropriation, others have gone on to find humour in the situation.

“It actually wasn’t too bad. Better than I can do,” one fan wrote, while another chuckled “everyone but Jamaicans are pissed about this lmfaoo.”

The light-hearted comments would continue with another fan joking “Yo who dropped extra jerk seasoning on his snapper?”

Hanks has appeared on hit TV shows such as Empire and Shameless. He identifies himself with the “black/hip-hop culture,” but has received backlash for using the n-word in the past.

Whether it may be cultural appropriation is up for debate, but it seems most Jamaicans don’t have an issue with the shoutout.
