Popular Ghanaian Dancehall, Afrobeats entertainer Ebony Reigns died in a motor vehicle accident on Thursday.

Reigns, whose given name is Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, was driving to Accra following a trip to Sunyani with two friends.

The musician was rushed to Bechem Government Hospital, where she was treated but later died from her injuries. Her two friends were also killed in the crash, while the driver of the bus is still being treated in hospital.

Reigns released her latest album ‘Bonyfied’ in December, following on from the success of her 2015 record, ‘Dancefloor’.

She was one of Ghana’s most popular rising Afrobeat stars, with her song Poison reaching the number one spot on the singles chart.

Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Ziblim Barri Iddi, says Ebony Reigns was a national asset. “It is sad, she was our biggest rising star in the industry and for me she actually exceeded her own expectations because she just came into the industry and took over and took charge, winning awards here and there and actually releasing fantastic music. So it’s a big blow to the industry. I think she was a national asset especially for us in the industry. We needed people like her to continue to keep the flame of Ghana music going.”

Ebony Reigns would have celebrated her 21st birthday next week on February 16, 2018.
