Comedian Gabre Nelson, who is a runner-up in the 2007 “Comedy Buss” competition created quite a stir after he proposed to his male companion during a live performance in New York recently.

Despite some criticism, including from a fellow Jamaican comedian who was also featured on the show, Nelson says he remains unbothered as was acting within his rights of freedom of speech and expression.

The 25-year-old comedian, who now resides in the US, says he decided to propose to his 8 year love interest after a fellow comedian had decided to sing Buju Banton’s Boom Bye Bye during his set.

According to Nelson, he doesn’t care about any possible backlash, as he doesn’t plan on returning to the island on permanent basis, citing that Jamaicans have a backward mentality towards homosexuality.
