Vybz Kartel

Vybz Kartel is calling out fellow Dancehall artistes for recording dubplates for the The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and The People’s National Party (PNP) candidates.

Social media erupted just moments after Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the date for Jamaica’s 18th general election. The General elections are scheduled to be held in Jamaica on 3 September 2020, with Nomination Day set for Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

Since the announcement, several candidates have released special dubplates recorded by some of our favourite Dancehall artistes.

Unfortunately Vybz Kartel isn’t here for it and took to his Instagram story on Thursday. “Dancehall burn politics, now artistes doing dubs fi dem. smfh.. me stop do concious song bout ya…. a bay gun lyrics!!! cause unuh beyond learning tpc!,” the deejay wrote.

So far, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, and MP for St Andrew North West, Dr Nigel Clarke dropped a Jahvillani dubplate for his smash hit single Clarks Pon Foot.

That offering was followed by, People’s National Party MP for St Ann South East, and general election campaign chief spokesperson, Lisa Hanna, recruiting Shenseea for “Trending Gyal.”

A Dovey Magnum dubplate cut off her “Bawl Out” single also surfaced online in support of PNP President, Dr Peter Phillips.

On Thursday, Central Manchester MP, Peter Bunting sent social media into a frenzy when he quickly accepted a challenge posted on Twitter to secure a “Dumpling” dubplate from Stylo G.

Speaking with The Star, The PNP co-campaign director said that music is a “key part of the campaign season, and will play an even more important role this year given the COVID-related restrictions on mass gatherings”.

“Political parties will have to re-invent themselves and find creative ways of communicating their message and energising their supporters,” he added.

On Thursday night, State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Floyd Green rolled out his “Owna Lane” cut from Teejay.
