The Tropixs (Kingston, Jamaica) What was the Dancehall track of the summer 2019 for you?

Ever since Ding Dong dropped “Holiday” back in 2009 it has become an annual ritual for Dancehall lovers to define their summers by one particular song and this year is no exception.

In the last few years Dancehall has produced number of summer anthems including Aidonia’s “Yeah Yeah,” Xclusive’s “Big Money Poppin,” and Vybz Kartel’s “Summer Time,” but this summer may actually be one of the most difficult with a plethora of hits to choose from.

Taking this all into account we here at The Tropixs have narrowed it down to ten tracks, which all made a significant impact on summer 19, both on the party scene and on streaming platforms.

10. Stylo G “Dumplin”

UK based Dancehall artiste Stylo G definately followed up on the success of his 2018 hit single “Touch Down” with this track. Within hours of its release, “Dumplin” had the streets rocking with its infectious beat and catchy punchlines.

9. Daddy 1 “Custom”

This trap-influenced track from the 6ix member was one of the defining songs of the summer. It was a crowd favorite particularly among young party-goers, who were all about making fashion statements.

8. Hot Frass & Takeova “Polo”

This track was one of those you just couldn’t escape, whether you were in a party or just casually rolling through traffic. Released in the early part of summer, this one was a crowd favorite and really put both young artistes on the map.

7. Ding Dong “Good Ting Dem”

Could there really be a summer anthem discussion without Ding Dong? He possibly started the whole phenomenon and continued to represent well with this track. It had everything that a summer song needed, it was fun, it was catchy, and had people of all ages dancing along.

6. Masicka “Drug Lawd”

This was not your typical summer anthem. It was a lot darker, grimier, but it was also an insanely massive hit! Not many tracks compared to this one when it came to crowd response.

5. Squash & Vybz Kartel “Beat Dem Bad”

This was the collaboration most Dancehall fans had been hoping for. Possibly the two hottest acts in the genre joined forces to give fans this absolute gem. It was everything a summer song needed to be!

4. Jahvillani “Nuh Reason”

This one was actually tricky one, as it technically came out before summer but only got bigger as the months went on. This was one the biggest tracks of the year and definitely put this St Ann artiste on the map. Name a more popular song? hard we know.

3. Intense “Guh Hard”

This one was a unpredictable smash hit. It feels like it just came out of nowhere then proceeding to dominating festivals such as Dream Weekend. Much like “Big Money Poppin” a few summers before this one seemed to thrive in its controversy, but it worked. Big hit!

2. Daddy 1 “Anthem”

This was one of, if not the biggest tracks this summer. It was loud, it was catchy, and boasted possibly one of the most recited lines this year “If yuh nah say 6ix no girl doa want yuh.” 2019 was a big year for this young deejay, and he definitely made it his own.

1. Vybz Kartel “Any Weather”

Was there any doubt over which track would claim the top spot? The King of The Dancehall once again blessed Dancehall fans with a memorable track, not just for this summer but possibly an era. This was Vybz Kartel at his finest, the witty metaphors, the catchy wordplay, all we have come to expect and then some… Amazing!
