Black Hypocrisy Spice

Its been a year since Spice broke the internet with her Black Hypocrisy single.

The Queen of Dancehall sent tongues wagging last year when she uploaded a light skinned photo to bring awareness about colourism.

“One year ago on this date October 22nd I boldly took a stance to address an issue that has been affecting darker skin black women,” Spice wrote. “LAST YEAR I BROKE THE INTERNET , but I hope I also BROKE THE BARRIERS OF COLORISM.”

“I did the extreme by using make up to create a Eurocentric appearance that seems to be more appreciated within today’s society. My make up picture was done just to bring awareness to colorism.”

“Today I hope that my message did not fly over your heads and that the darker skin black women are loved and appreciated equally as any shade . Happy anniversary #blackhypocrisy #blackhypocrisymovement,” she continued.

Spice gained huge publicity following her stunt and the release of Black Hypocrisy music video which was reported by TMZ, Essence Magazine and Daily Mail.

Black Hypocrisy tackles the issue of colourism. In the song, Spice reveals that for years she has had to deal with harsh criticism about the colour of her skin, often by those who were the same complexion as her. Pointing out that black people are very critical of their own kind, Spice urges people of colour to love the skin they are in.

“I think I am mostly called black by my own race, and I am trying to please them so I am going to see what they have to say now,” she said during an interview, adding that she has never received certain comments from other races, because “it’s always my own people saying ‘she black eeh’,” among other distasteful descriptions.
