Dante Brooks, the teenage son of Dancehall superstar Mavado, has been convicted of murder.
The 18-year-old was found guilty by a jury in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston earlier today. He was also convicted on illegal possession of firearm and arson charges.
His co-accused, Andre Hinds, was also found guilty and are set to be sentenced on March 10.
Both men were charged with the killing of Lorenzo Thomas in the St Andrew community of Cassava Piece on June 5, 2018.
The prosecution argued that Brooks and Hinds were among five men who shot Thomas during the home invasion. They say the men did so before pushing his father into another room.
The say the men attempted to sever Thomas’ head, but was forced to abort because the machete was too dull. The men then poured gasoline on the house and body before setting them on fire.
The prosecution’s case mainly relied on the testimony of Thomas’ father, who says he knew his son’s killers from the community.
Earlier this month Mavado had expressed confidence that his son would be freed. He took to Instagram to share an emotional photo with his son, claiming he was ‘coming home soon.’
