Macka Diamond Mackerel

The Tropixs (Kingston, Jamaica) – Macka Diamond has some advice for the new ‘Mackerel’ on the scene.

Veteran female Dancehall artiste Macka Diamond, who formerly went by the moniker “Lady Mackerel,” is sharing some positive advice towards her younger namesake “Mackerel.”

During a recent interview with The Star the veteran deejay explained exactly how she came by the name “Lady Mackerel,” and why she eventually decided to change it in the mid 2000s.

According to Macka, similar to the current social media sensation she faced a lot of ridicule over the “Mackerel” name back in the 80s, as many saw the name as unconventional.

She claims the name was first suggested to her after she counteracted a song from Major Mackerel, and was later convinced by legendary producer King Tubby to stick with it by promising her he would release her track if she used the moniker.

The “Cucumber” deejay says she eventually became tired of the constant jeering and decided to change her stage name in the mid 2000s, eventually settling on “Macka Diamond.”

Although she is glad to have shed the Mackerel moniker the veteran deejay had nothing but positive words for her younger counterpart.

According to Macka, the social media sensation should just continue to do her thing as it’s just a name, and the entertainment business often requires a unique name, to stand out.

“If she likes it, she can keep it. Mi even run a joke pon social media seh mi like how mi name surface back and who knows, maybe she can use the Diamond or Pearl after, so the name will live on.”

Mackerel has been making quite a splash in recent weeks following the release of her new single “A So Mi,” which has earned her the praise of fans and fellow entertainers alike, including Vybz Kartel and Spice.
