Lawyers Already Looking To Appeal Mavado’s Son Murder Conviction

Attorneys representing Mavado’s son are already prepping for an appeal as soon as he is sentenced.

Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie has hinted that they will request a review of Dante Brooks’ conviction the Jamaican Court of Appeal. The news comes just days after the 18-year-old was convicted in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.

“The defense team is obviously disappointed in the decision, however, I hasten to add that the ruling of a Court must always be respected. This does not take away from a person’s right to appeal. Having said that, we are of the view that the verdict is one that could benefit a review by way of an appeal,” Champagnie declared.

“In all the circumstances, it would be inappropriate to go beyond any commentary than what is stated here because the matter is not yet an end. There is a sentencing phase and then thereafter, we will proceed as soon as we can to have the matter dealt with in terms of the Court of Appeal. I know there has been much public interest in this matter, the matter was well contested and we will await an ultimate decision in this matter in the Court of Appeal,” Champagnie added.

On Wednesday Brooks was also found guilty of illegal possession of firearm and arson charges. His co-accused, Andre Hinds, was also found guilty of the same charge.

Both men were charged with the killing of Lorenzo Thomas in the St Andrew on June 5, 2018.

The prosecution say Brooks and Hinds were among five men who shot Thomas during the home invasion.

The say the men attempted to sever Thomas’ head, but was forced to abort because the machete was too dull. The men then poured gasoline on the house and body before setting them on fire.

The teenage and his co-accused will be sentenced on March 12, 2021.
