LASCO Affiliated Group of Companies has issued an apology, and terminated an employee following an offensive tweet that was made regarding historic gold medal-winning Olympian Omar McLeod.
Eyebrows were raised after Lasco Jamaica’s official twitter account made a offensive tweet about McLeod after he had won gold in the 110-metre hurdles at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday night.
The comment was made in reaction to the Gleaner’s online interactive question, “If you could caption tomorrow’s Jamaica Gleaner front page of Omar McLeod what would it read?”
Shockingly the Lasco Jamaica twitter account responded “Goldfish,” the term “fish” in Jamaican culture is known to be a discriminatory phrase to describe homosexual person.
The company has since issued an apology to the Jamaican athlete, and all Jamaicans for the offensive tweet.
Lasco also revealed that the employee responsible for the disturbing post has been terminated, and that their actions did not represent the company’s values in any way or form.
“We wish to sincerely apologize to our fans, friends, customers, consumers, partners, Jamaicans and everyone for this terrible act. Most importantly, we issue our sincerest apologies to Mr. Omar McLeod.”
The tweet has since been deleted, and the account deactivated.
