Kemar Highcon Says Paying Dancehall Selectors To Play Songs is Stupid

The Tropixs (Kingston, Jamaica) – Kemar Highcon has rubbished claims of disc jocks forcing Dancehall artistes to pay for plays.

The “Sauce Boss” recent made the comments during a interview with The Fix, where he was asked what he thought about the claims by Dancehall artiste Mr. Vegas, that some music selectors have been engaging in payola.

Just weeks ago Mr. Vegas managed to spark controversy after claiming that selectors were “sticking up artistes and producers” demanding pay-for-play.

However, the “So Saucy” deejay has downplayed these claims saying “Fi me, personally I don’t feel like paying to get your song played works. Case you can’t force people to like music. You can’t force people to connect wid yuh; it is stupid,” he argued.

“There is no gate and anybody that believe there is a gate is stupid. There is no gate in life. Your possibilities to excel in life is limitless,” he hit back when selectors were then compared to gatekeepers on Dancehall.

The deejay would go on to say that has never been approached by any selector demanding money for his his songs to be played, so this phenomenon is completely new to him.

“I don’t experience it so I cannot say spent a dollar, because I have never spent a dollar… there are so much people who play my song, I don’t have to spend a dollar,” the deejay said.

“I don’t believe it is something that apply to everybody because a selector neva ask me for money yet to play my song. Neva! A selector neva com to me yet and seh ‘I need money fi play yo song,” he emphasized.

The fast rising deejay however pointed out that many young artiste are actually the ones approaching selectors offering money as due to their failure to network themselves properly.

“Believe it or not, you have some young artiste who would probably approach a selector with money to play their song to how badly they want their song to get played and nobody no look pon it da way deh,” he said.
