Ishawna Father Breaks Silence On Equal Rights Controversy

Ishawna has received some timely backing from her father following criticisms over her “Equal Rights” single.

The female Dancehall singer has received the backing of her father Don Angelo, who is a New York based Reggae singer following weeks of backlash stemming from her controversial single “Equal Rights.”

The former Downsound Records star sent tongues wagging following the release of her hit single, which infamously encouraged females to demand oral pleasures from their male counterparts.

Despite the single promoting a usually taboo topic in the Dancehall circle, Angelo feels his daughter has being unfairly targeted.

According to Angelo, several other Dancehall artists have done similar songs in the past including Lady Saw, Ce’cile, Tanya Stephens and Gage, and yet Ishawna remains the first to be so harshly criticized.

The veteran singer pointed out that raunchy and suggestive lyrics have always been a part of the Dancehall culture, pointing out that hits from as early as the 1980’s also utilized strong sexual content.

Angelo is however not overly concerned with the opinions of some of his daughter’s harshest critics as he says a large proportion of Dancehall fans actually support “Equal Rights,” especially female fans.

He went on to say that if any criticism should be leveled at anyone it should be producers, who he feels often encourage artists to pen controversial lyrics just to gain attention for their record labels.

Despite the backlash “Equal Rights” one of the hottest tracks currently on the dancehall scene.
