Government Commits $5 Million Towards Luton Shelton’s Medical Bills

The Jamaican Government has committed JA$5 Million towards the medical bills of former national footballer Luton Shelton who has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also called Lou Gherigs Disease.

The announcement was recently made by the Minister of Information, Youth, Sports & Culture, Olivia “Babsy” Grange after revelations that the former national striker and Jamaica’s top goal scorer had been struggling with the disease.

Fans learned of the footballer’s tragic condition earlier this week after an interview was aired on TVJ highlighting his ongoing battle and struggle with the disease.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND), or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a specific disease which causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles.

ALS is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching, and gradually worsening weakness due to muscles decreasing in size. This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing.

The cause is not known in 90% to 95% of cases.
