Demaro Becomes Dancehall’s First Openly Gay Artiste, Urges Jamaican LGBTQ Community To Stay Strong With ‘Mi Readi’ Video

Demaro wants to break stigmas in the LGBTQ community.

Dancehall’s first openly gay artist Demaro is hoping he can break stigmas with his debut single “Mi Readi.”

The single sees the entertainer showcasing his unique musical style, which is a fusion of Soca, hip-hop, Afrobeat, and Dancehall.

The music video, which is directed by Tony Valles, sees Demaro strolling through the streets of New York City.

Demaro boldly pushes the boundaries in the visuals, showcasing drag performers and skin-tight attire.

“I want people to listen to my music with an open mind and know that I’m a gay artist who’s been through some struggles, but I’m still here not giving up,” said Demaro.

The 34-year-old entertainer, who was born in the rural parish of Westmoreland, says he realized his sexuality at a very young age.

Demaro says he relocated to the United States at the age of 22, after realizing that Jamaica wasn’t the best place for him.

“I just knew that I wanted more, and Jamaica never had much to offer me,” Demaro explained. “I never had much help in Jamaica navigating myself and knowing that I had these feelings. There was no one there that I could talk to about what I was feeling.”

However, it has not all been easy going for the entertainer. He revealed that he has battled depression and even homelessness at one point.

Despite this, Demaro says he hopes his music and story can be an inspiration for other gay men.

“I want younger gay men, especially in Jamaica, to keep on fighting,” Demaro said. “Don’t give up. You’re beautiful and going to be OK. Don’t give up on yourself. We’ve all gone through bad times, but young men must keep pushing.”

Demaro’s debut EP, Good Vibes Only, is set for a spring 2020 release date.
