Court Orders Patrick Powell To Pay Khajeel Mais Family $2 Million

A Supreme Court judge has ruled that embattled businessman Patrick Powell will have to pay Khajeel Mais’ family $2 million in damages following a wrongful-death lawsuit.

The default judgement against the businessman who was accused of being involved in the shooting incident which claimed the life of a then 17-year-old student Khajeel Mais back in 2011 was handed down by Justice Stephanie Jackson Haisley in the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The court ruled that Powell should pay Mais’ family $1.7 million in special damages at three per cent interest from July 1, 2011, as well as $206,788 in general damages at three per cent interest from February last year for loss of expectation of life.

The ruling comes several years after the criminal case against the popular businessman collapsed after the prosecution’s star witness failed to positively identify Powell as the shooter in the incident.

Powell is currently serving a nine-month prison sentence for a charge relating to Mais’ death as he failed to turn over his licensed Glock pistol to investigators during the case.
