The Ministry of Foreign affairs has confirmed that over 40 Jamaicans from the United Kingdom were deported back to the island, by way of charter flight, on Wednesday.

According to reports, 42 Jamaican nationals, much of whom had spent majority of their lives in the United Kingdom were deported back to Jamaica aboard a chartered flight. They were reportedly deported due to failure to regularize their stay and become citizens of the United Kingdom.

According to the Ministry of National Security flights such as this one have been used over the years in accordance with a M.O.U. signed in 2007 between the governments of Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

Many of those who were deported reportedly expressed disappointment towards the Jamaican government, saying that they were “sold out.”

A small protest was also reportedly staged in London opposing the charted flight, claiming that majority of the Jamaicans spent most of their lives in the United Kingdom, and had no family or friends back in Jamaica, and would be lost in the system.

Upon arrival the 42 deportees were reportedly processed and released by police.
