Beenie Man
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is denying reports that veteran Dancehall artiste Beenie Man has been arrested for breaching the coronavirus law.
The rumours started circulating on social media Friday claiming the Doc, real name Moses Davis was allegedly taken into police custody after keeping a wake for his late mother.
“He [Beenie Man] is not in police custody,” and, “no, he wasn’t,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Stephanie Lindsay, who heads the JCF’s Corporate Communications Unit.
SPP Lindsay explained that the police ended a gathering on Friday that Beenie Man was hosting in honour of his late mother because the number of people there exceeded the limit allowed under the Disaster Risk Management Act.
Speaking with The Gleaner, Lindsay said “He was instructed to close it off. He did comply and the fact that he complied then, there would be no need to arrest him.”
Following the recent general elections in Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that public gatherings were reduced to 15 persons, down from 20. The island wide curfew is now from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., daily.
On Saturday, Jamaica recorded seven more COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total to 67.
The country also recorded 230 new infections with ages ranging from 1 day to 104 years, increasing the overall figure to 4,988 cases with 3,489 of them being active.
