A 5-year-old boy was attacked by a mountain lion at his home in Colorado Friday night.

According to a Pitkin Sheriff’s Department report, the child was attacked while playing with his older brother at home. His mother reportedly heard screams and ran outside to find a mountain lion attacking the child.

The mother told police she was able to pull the child away from the animal. The child reportedly sustained injuries to his face, head and neck and is now in a Denver hospital in stable condition.

The child’s mother, reportedly sustained minor injuries to her hand and legs, she was treated and released in good condition.

Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife say that a recent increase in numbers of mountain lion attacks is blamed on more people moving into their habitat and a rise in the deer population.
