Three persons were injured on Saturday after being attacked by a knife-wielding patient at the Black River Hospital in St Elizabeth.

According to reports, a female patient care assistant received minor injuries after being attacked by the patient. Two men, a hospital staff member and a visitor received knife wounds to the hands, chest and back as they tried to restrain the assailant.

Hospital officials say while their injuries are not considered serious, they are still under observation at the facility.

Meanwhile, the attacker who was admitted to hospital following seizures, fled the scene however was later captured by the Black River police. The unidentified man is now in police custody at the Hospital.

Sean Brissett, parish manager for health services in St Elizabeth, says counselling sessions are being arranged for staff and patients following the incident.
