Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness has declared a State of Public Emergency in St James.

Holness made the announcement moments ago during a live press briefing at Jamaica House citing the level of violence in the second city has reached intolerable limits.

“The Government has been contemplating this action for sometime,” the prime minister said. “It is not an action for show,” he stressed.

Earlier this morning a major military operation started in the entire parish. The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldiers were visible stopping and searching motor vehicles at various points in the parish where 335 murders were recorded last year, that’s 67 more than reported in 2016.
