Jhene Aiko stopped by BBC Radio’s 1Xtra Breakfast Show With Dotty to talk about motherhood, how her relationship with Big Sean evolved and more.

She gave a detailed timeline of how and when she met Sean, starting with their blossoming friendship and working together back in 2013 on “Beware” featuring Lil Wayne and “I’m Gonna Be.” She recalled their first unofficial date, even though she had a boyfriend at the time. The two still had not become a couple yet due to bad timing.

“He wanted to take me out on a date. I had a boyfriend, but I still went…just as a friend,” she recalls. “I had never been courtside to a game and he’s cool. I told my boyfriend ‘I’m gonna go to this game.’”

Although Aiko ended her relationship after discovering her boyfriend was legally married, she didn’t reconnect with Big Sean until years later.

The singer also talked about balancing motherhood while working at a vegan café and trying to decide if music was her career choice. “You know, it was a blessing. She really gave me the drive and the purpose to be like, ‘OK, you really have to get something done,” she said of her 9-year-old daughter Namiko. “At one point, I was like, ‘I can only do one.’ It was very hard to do both. Very stressful. I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just gonna go with it; quit this job and just go out on a whim and see if this music can be what supports us, ya know. And it turned out good.”
