D’Angel is making it clear that her divorce with Beenie Man has nothing to do with her dropping the ‘First Lady of Dancehall’ title.

Earlier this week the “Stronger” singer announced that she has decided to drop her popular “First lady of Dancehall” title and should now be refferred to as the “Lady of Dancehall.”

D’ Angel, whose given name is Michelle Downer, started to call herself the First lady of Dancehall after getting married to Beenie Man back in back in 2006.

Unfortunately the two filed for divorced in 2011, which was finalised recently. Shortly after D’Angel made the announcement, Dancehall fans began to speculate that her divorce was the reason for the name change.

However D’Angel is now refuting the claims, according to her, the decision to drop the“First lady of Dancehall” moniker is a signal that she is entering into a new phase of her life and career.

D’Angel says she is now looking to the future and refuses to carry anything from her past that she believes will contradict her growth.

“I’m on a different level now. I’m about to venture into different things and the ‘first’ nah come wid mi. Of course, I will always be the “FIRST” of a lot of things. That will never change,” D’Angel told the Star. “Me and Beenie Man been done, been over, and been doing our own thing. Dem same people deh weh a talk now, always a put me and him inna things weh wi nuh inna. My real fans will understand this move and to those who are saying that I will always be the first lady in their eyes; I’m just asking them to respect my decision.”

Angel also shut down rumours that she was pressured to drop the titled as many found her saying she was still the First lady despite not being with Beenie Man was a bit disrespectful to his current relationship with Krystal Tomlinson.
