Industry insiders have offered their take on the controversial topic of Dancehall artistes buying views on YouTube.

In recent weeks allegations have emerged that several Dancehall entertainers have been buying fake views and comments on social platforms and streaming services such as YouTube.

According to Donavon Watkis, creator and host of World Music Views, which is aired during Entertainment Report on TVJ, these practices are foolish as it benefits the artiste in no tangible way.

“YouTube won’t pay them for those views and you can’t make it to my chart if you buy views because YouTube won’t calculate the views that you bought,” Watkis said.

He claims the only benefit he can see is to generate a buzz and create headlines, however, even this is flawed as fans can see through the tactic.

Watkis claims one quick way to spot whether views are being bought is to look at the interaction ratio, as some artiste may have millions of views but only a handful of actual comments.

The music insider went on to say that entertainers should instead focus on smarter tactics such as sponsored YouTube promotions, which actually generate real views based on suggestions to users.

Watkis’ comments come after some fans recently accused Dancehall artiste Shenseea and her management team of buying likes and views on YouTube and Instagram in order to generate a buzz.
