On Monday senators in the Upper House deliberated on the National Identification System – NIDS – Bill and it was given the green light, without support from the Opposition.

The legislation is being labelled as “intrusive” and “poorly thought out”. The NIDS is a registration system which stipulates that every citizen will give over their biometric data.

Biometric information includes photograph, signature, fingerprint, toe-print, palm print, iris scan, retina scan, blood type, and eye colour.

The legislation makes it mandatory for citizens to register and there will be a massive fine, of up to $100,000, for citizens who fail to register. Even children will have to possess one of these IDs.
